The CTU's anti-spoofing measures are working, millions of calls a month are being blocked and the number of frauds is falling
29 November 2024 - CTU evaluated the effectiveness of newly set conditions to prevent connecting fraudulent calls in which the identification of the caller of the voice communication was purposely mistaken (so-called spoofing). On the basis of the CTU´s regulatory measure, millions of attempted calls per month are blocked and the institutions contacted declare a decrease in the number of fraudulent calls.
Based on its communication with the operators concerned, the Czech Banking Association and the Police of the Czech Republic, CTU assessed as sufficient the current measures in the form of conditions set by a measure of general nature for operators operating international interconnection points. According to previous declarations, mobile operators are gradually introducing technical measures also for mobile numbers. Currently, these measures also appear to be very effective and CTU does not see any grounds for regulatory intervention.
However, caution is still needed, especially in view of the fact that fraudsters are using new methods and techniques. These include, for example, sending SMS with fraudulent links to extort important information and/or funds from the recipient. In order to identify fraudulent SMS, to check them and to ensure protective measures and communication with e.g. the Police of the Czech Republic, mobile operators offer the possibility to forward these SMSs free of charge to the number 7726.
CTU considers all the protective measures in place on a regulatory and voluntary basis to be effective and does not see the need for further regulation. It monitors the area and will continuously assess the possibility and need for regulatory intervention.
