Role
The AIA establishes specific roles with associated responsibilities. These are the following roles:
AI system provider
First and foremost, they must ensure that the so-called high-risk AI systems they develop are safe and reliable. For this purpose, they must meet requirements covering risk management, transparency for users, human oversight, data handling, technical documentation, logging or reporting of serious incidents. Other obligations include, for example, labelling “synthetic content” created by AI systems or registering AI systems in an EU database.
Importer and distributor of AI system
Everyone has specific responsibilities of a more administrative nature, depending on their position in the supply chain.
Organizations using AI systems (implementing entities)
In particular, they are required to use high-risk AI systems in accordance with the instructions for use and under the supervision of a qualified person, to monitor their operation or to report serious incidents. In selected cases, they must, for example, assess the impact of the use of the AI system on fundamental rights, register their use in an EU database or inform affected employees and other persons that they will be exposed to the AI system.
An important aspect is therefore determining the specific role that the entity plays and becoming familiar with the responsibilities associated with these roles.
