PRESS RELEASE: Internet still mainly via Wi-Fi, almost half of accesses already have speeds over 100 Mbit/s

Prague, 24 September 2024 – Today, CTU published report on price development and report on electronic communications market development with a focus on 2023. The main findings include, for example, the still rising volume of data transferred within fixed and mobile internet, although the rise is no longer as sharp as in previous years. The highest year-on-year growth (+170.8%) was in the volume of data transferred over 5G networks, which reached over 104 PB in 2023, but still accounted for a minority share of 7.8% of the total. Compared to the previous period, when there was a decline, the total volume of minutes called on mobile networks increased slightly.

In 2023, an average of more than 332 GB of data per active connection per month was transferred in the Czech Republic as part of internet access services at a fixed location - a total of more than 16 EB of data was transferred to users in that year. The number of active accesses to the internet at a fixed location reached 4.1 million in 2023, and the share of accesses with advertised speeds ≥ 100 Mbit/s increased again to almost 44%. Wireless access in available bands (Wi-Fi) continued to be the most used method of internet access at a fixed location in 2023, with a share of 27.2%.

In mobile internet access, users transferred a total of over 1.3 EB of data in 2023 (41.2% year-on-year growth). This compares with 943 PB in the previous period and 62.9% year-on-year growth. Average monthly data consumption per SIM card used for mobile internet access increase to 9.67 GB. There was also a further increase in the number of SIM cards with mobile internet access to almost 11.5 million, with the total number of active SIM cards rising to 15.55 million.

The volume of minutes called on mobile networks reached 26.6 billion real minutes in 2023, i.e. 1.1% year-on-year growth.
