PRESS RELEASE: WiFi continues to dominate the market, optic fibre networks catching up
Prague, 23 September 2026 – Today, Czech telecommunication office published reports on price developments and the electronic communications market, with a focus on 2025. A new document is the Main trends and predictions of possible developments in the electronic communications market.
What are the main findings? The total annual investment volume of more than CZK 21 billion, and in particular the increase in the investment rate in networks and services at a fixed location, contributed to a further increase in average data consumption per active connection of internet access services at a fixed location to more than 428 GB per month, bringing the total to almost 22 EB transmitted to users in 2025. The number of accesses to the internet service at a fixed location reached almost 4.3 million and the number of accesses at advertised speeds ≥ 100 Mbit/s was already almost 60 % of the total. Wireless access in free bands (‘WiFi’) remained the most used form of access to the internet at a fixed location in 2025 with a share of 26 %, closely followed by optic fibre networks with 25 % representation.
In the context of mobile internet access (i.e. without fixed LTE/5G services), users transmitted data in 2025 for a total volume close to 2.2 EB and the average monthly data consumption per SIM card used for mobile internet access increased just above 15 GB. There was also a further increase in the number of SIM cards to more than 11.9 million, and the total number of active SIM cards came to a halt just below 16 million.
Between 2021 and 2025, the electronic communications market continued its trend of growth in the volume of services used, in particular data. The growth in mobile data consumption significantly outpaced the increase in nominal service prices, leading to a further decline in average unit prices for 1 GB of data transmitted. The average retail price per GB of mobile data on the market as a whole decreased by more than 60 % between 2021 and 2025, while the volume of data transmitted and the share of tariffs with high or unlimited data limits continued to increase. The average price per minute of mobile calls stabilised in 2025, after previous years of decline, while the average price per SMS continued to increase. This development is mainly driven by the continued shift of communications to other applications and the gradual decline in the importance of traditional voice and SMS services. Overall, price developments in the postal and telecommunications sectors have contributed to dampening inflation growth in the national economy.
The rapid growth of data traffic, driven by the increasing use of video content, the increased penetration of unlimited data tariffs and the continued digitalisation of society, remains a major trend in the mobile market. By 2028, the average monthly data consumption on a SIM card could increase by around 75 % (in terms of the total number of SIM cards) and the total volume of mobile data by more than 80 %. At the same time, the volume of data transmitted on 5G networks after 2027 can be expected to exceed the volume of data on 4G networks. By contrast, voice traffic will mostly stagnate. SMS services will continue to give way to OTT communication applications.
On the market for fixed internet access, the long-term technological transformation towards optic fibre networks continues, with the Office expecting to take the first position in terms of number of active connections already in 2026. At the same time, the Office projects a further increase of more than 37 % in 2028 compared to 2025. By contrast, xDSL technology enters the final phase of its life cycle – the Office projects a significant decrease of up to 18 % in the number of xDSL connections by 2028.
